Our Vacation- Day One

Our trip to the Cape started just as it had all those years ago - the last minute loading of food, the last minute loading of people, a stop to get Munchkins, etc. There were, however, a few not-so-minor differences: no van and, more importantly, no Jake.

The last of our many vans died years ago (a painful death) and with a semi-dispersed family, it made no sense to replace it with another. So for this trip, we squeezed into my old, just repaired (hopefully) smaller-than-a-van-and-no-roof-rack car.

And, since Jake happens to be one of those aforementioned semi-dispersed family members, he would instead be driving to the Cape and meeting us there.

Thankfully, the traffic to the Cape wasn't bad too bad (relatively speaking) and we managed to meet Jake pretty much at the expected time - which, as anyone who has driven to the Cape can attest, is kind of a miracle.

Our meeting place was at the Dennis town offices. This is where you now get a beach sticker (as opposed to where we used to get them - which at some point was apparently torn down and is now a parking lot.)

Being van-less (with no roof rack), meant we would now be traveling everywhere we went in two cars -including to the beach(es). So this meant two stickers.

Another change from previous years.

From there, we headed off to (one of our) our favorite beach(es).

I was a little nervous about going to this beach. In the years since our last visit I’ve occasionally checked this place out on Google Earth and from what I could tell (from a million miles out in space) it looked like there had been some work done to this place.

This beach holds a lot of fond memories for me and I wasn’t sure I was ready to see those memories bulldozed beyond recognition.

Thankfully, it turned out the changes were relatively minor - snack bar and bathroom renovations, a retaining wall, new stairs - nothing that changed the personality of the place.

So here we were - on the Cape for less than an hour - and we were already making progress on Sam's list.
