The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Graduation season just ended and, for us, this means two things. 1) Before they rip the giant tent down, Sam and I needed to hustle on over to the college so he could use his metal detector to (hopefully) find some spare change.

And, 2)... I forget what number two is but I'm pretty sure there's a number two.

Anyway, Sam and I did indeed head over to the college - he with his metal detector (and garden shovel, just in case) and me with, well, nothing.

Our usual routine, which has paid off so dearly in years past, is that I take the lead, slowly walking the perimeter of the tent, and Sam, some distance behind me, traces my path, sweeping his metal detector side-to-side as he inches along.

This year, thankfully, as in years past, Sam's diligence and keen eye (and metal detector) really paid off. He netted a cool four dollars-or-so in change. That's four dollars - American!

Not too shabby for ninety minutes worth of work.

Another Rainy Day

I don't know if this has been the wettest summer in history but if not, it must be right up there. Sam and I have had more rainy walks in the last two weeks than we did all summer long last year.

I like the occasional rainy day but geez, this has been a little extreme.

(Side note: Spell check insists on correcting "geez" to "geese". Just an FYI.)

All Together (for) Now

The nicest thing about Father's Day - or at least, most Father's Days - is that we're able to get together as a family and spend a little time together.

The presents are nice (and thoughtful). And going out to lunch is always fun (though I don't like not paying). But any of those things are special because of the people I'm with.

I think that's pretty much true of any of my fond memories.

Here are some photos from a family walk that day. (The first couple are of Helaina rescuing a hungry bee.)...

Today (again)

This old photo of Mom and Dad is from a slide taken in late April, 1986 (the 20th, according to my notes). I like to think that Mom and Dad are still out there somewhere, spending time together, still browsing that giant flea market in the sky, still finding bargains...

And this, like everything else on this blog, has been posted over and over again. But here it is one more time. It wouldn't feel like Father's Day without it...
